Safety Policy
Last updated: [DATE]
This policy describes the measures SpotOn takes to keep you safe, what to do if something goes wrong, and where to find help.
If you are in immediate danger, call 999 (UK) right now.
Our commitments
We promise to:
- Take every report seriously. A real person reviews every report. We do not auto-dismiss reports, and we do not require "evidence" before we look.
- Never tell the reported person who reported them. Your report is confidential.
- Act on serious threats within 24 hours. Sexual harassment, threats of violence, content involving minors, and stalking patterns are prioritised.
- Cooperate with police. When properly requested, we will share account data, message history, and identifying information with UK police investigating a crime.
- Be transparent about what we know about you. You can request your data at any time (see the Privacy Policy).
- Tell you about meaningful changes. When we change these guidelines or our policies, we'll notify you in the app.
Built-in protections
These are always on:
Same-gym scoping
You only appear to people who train at the same gym you do. Not the whole city, not your colleagues, not strangers in another postcode. The server enforces this — there is no way for someone outside your gym to "find" you on Discover.
Mutual-consent chat
A connection request can include a one-line hello. After that, full chat only opens when both of you have tapped "Connect." No endless one-way messaging. No surprise DMs.
Gender visibility controls
You choose who can discover you: everyone, women only, or men only. The choice is yours and you can change it any time.
Block
Blocking is bidirectional and immediate. The other person can't see you in Discover, can't read your profile, can't send a new connection request, can't message you, and can't follow you. They aren't notified that you blocked them.
Pause
If you want a break without losing your data, pause your account. You disappear from Discover and from non-connection profile views. Existing chats keep working. Unpause anytime.
Soft delete with grace
Deleting your account starts a 30-day grace window. Sign back in inside that time and everything is restored. After 30 days, your account and personal data are permanently removed.
Profile privacy
Your profile is logged-in-only — anonymous deep links land on a sign-up screen, not your real profile. Within the app, profile fetches are gated by the same rules as Discover.
No location sharing
SpotOn does not collect or share your real-time location. We know your gym (because you told us) and your broad city — nothing more granular.
No public message history
Conversations are visible only to the two people in them. They're not searchable, indexed, or shown to anyone else.
Tips for meeting up
When you arrange to train, share a class, or grab a coffee with someone you met on SpotOn:
- Stay in the gym for the first meet-up. Train together at a session before suggesting anything off-site.
- Tell a friend. Let someone know who you're meeting, where, and when.
- Don't share personal info too early. Your home address, workplace, full name, and bank details are not first-meeting information.
- Trust your gut. If something feels off — a comment, a vibe, the way they look at you — you don't have to explain why. You can leave.
- Don't accept drinks or food you didn't see prepared. Especially in unfamiliar settings.
- Keep your own ride. Don't rely on someone else for the journey home until you trust them.
What to do if something happens
If you feel unsafe right now
- Immediate physical danger: Call 999.
- Stuck in a worrying situation: Get to a public area or staff member. Most UK gyms have a panic button or 24/7 reception.
If something happened in the app
- Block them. This stops further contact immediately.
- Report them. Tap the "Report" option on their profile or in the connection menu. Choose the category that fits best. Add as much detail as you can in the notes field — what they said, when, and how it made you feel.
- Take screenshots. If it might escalate, screenshot the conversation before you block (blocking removes the chat). Save them somewhere safe.
- Email us if it's serious. safety@spoton.app — for anything police-level. Include your account email, the other person's display name, and screenshots if you have them.
If a crime has been committed
You can report a crime to UK police directly:
- 999 for emergencies.
- 101 for non-emergencies.
- Online: report.police.uk
For specific crime types:
- Sexual assault, rape, or sexual coercion: Rape Crisis England & Wales, free 24/7 helpline 0808 500 2222. Or contact a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) for medical care and evidence collection — find one.
- Stalking or harassment: National Stalking Helpline, 0808 802 0300.
- Domestic abuse: National Domestic Abuse Helpline, free 24/7, 0808 2000 247. Refuge.org.uk.
- Hate crime: Report via report-it.org.uk — covers race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender-identity hate.
We will fully support any criminal investigation: we will preserve relevant account and message data, hand it over under a proper data-disclosure request, and remove the reported person's access to the app while the investigation is ongoing.
If you're struggling with your mental health
- Samaritans — free 24/7, 116 123. Call any time, about anything.
- Shout — UK crisis text line, text SHOUT to 85258.
- Mind — mental health info and support, 0300 123 3393 (Mon-Fri 9am-6pm), mind.org.uk.
- If you are thinking about suicide: Samaritans (above), or your GP, or A&E.
What we don't do
We're not perfect, and being transparent matters:
- We do not vet identities. We don't currently require ID verification. Anyone signing up could in principle lie about their age, gender, or gym. We are working on this — see "Coming soon" below.
- We do not verify gym membership. You self-declare your gym. We're piloting partnerships with UK gyms to verify membership, but it isn't live yet.
- We do not proactively scan messages. Your DMs are not read by SpotOn unless someone reports a specific message thread. We do not use AI to flag conversations preemptively.
- We do not screen photos before upload. Image moderation (auto-detection of nudity, violence, etc.) is on the roadmap but not yet live. Until it is, we rely on reports.
Coming soon (what we're working on)
- Verified gym membership. Partnerships with UK gyms so the green "Verified at this gym" tick means something.
- Image moderation. Auto-detection of nudity and violence on uploaded photos before they go live.
- Voice + video verification. Optional check that you're a real person, matching your photos.
- Rate limits + behaviour patterns. Auto-detection of spammy or harassing patterns (e.g. sending the same message to many people), surfaced to moderation.
